I can only assume that, it was trying to be like the vim over the sea of code editors. a personal project that gained a traction, then the fork or implementation become more popular (omp), which might lead the funding went through omp rather than pi directly.

and now it sounds like they are going back to be a harness like any harness would do

during the last massive ui garbage fire everyone complained it couldn't be feature flagged, because that meant they had to do development on a separate branch, which meant nobody tested it.  so now they are careful to make this stuff gateable by flags.

it does not seem to have occurred to them to stop fucking up the user interface, which would remove the need for either approach.

@cinnamon @SuperDicq If you use the "Open Folder" function (and turn on the LSP integration for the language of your choice) it behaves in a way very close to an IDE, where the folder is your project

Search for symbol? Ctrl-Alt-P
Whole-folder text search/replace? Ctrl-Shift-F
Markdown preview? There's a plugin for that
Ctrl-click to go to definition/shows type on hover/find usages/etc.? If your language's LSP can do it then Kate will let you do it

And so on

But then again my needs are quite basic here haha

@SuperDicq@minidisc.tokyo @koakuma@uwu.social If you show the "Filesystem browser" left panel (instead of the "Documents" one), Kate's behaviour is more similar-ish to a traditional IDE.

Although if you're looking for a traditional IDE, maybe KDevelop is more suitable for that, I don't know (and don't use it myself; also I only use Kate for editing scattered and disconnected text files, organized in sessions).

@koakuma@uwu.social Yes, but Kate lacks any sort of project management or allows you to do any sort of project wide action like search, replace, etc.

Or maybe it does and it I haven't found it yet because I really feel like it is not made for anything other than making small edits to single files.
