RMS actually invented the "long haired bearded dude rants unscripted in front of a camera in a messy room for 20+ minutes straight" style of video in 2001.
This style of video only became popular 20 years later by poor imitators like penguinz0 and asmongold.
RMS is a true innovator.

@kaia@pleroma.soykaf.com Did you finally find the RMS rider document?
Honestly I think it is a good document. I appreciate this type of openness a lot. As an autistic person myself I wish more people came with an instruction manual like this.
A lot of people have specific needs but they won't tell you what their needs are so then you host them and they will complain.

Someone has to own the backbone and own the hardware capable of handling tens of terabits while routing it correctly and without extra delays.
Preferably the internet would work in a drastically different way that makes it more suitable to use without huge routers, distributing the routing load more evenly across nodes, think of mesh networks and protocols such as IPFS.
And another option is deprivatization. If large infastructure really ends up being necessary then maybe all this infrastructure could be owned by everyone in a democratic way. Or is that too socialist for your liking?

@phnt@fluffytail.org @icedquinn@blob.cat @tyil@fedi.tyil.nl @sun@shitposter.world @pwm@darkdork.dev I know how the internet works. I just think it should work differently. Preferably without ISPs at all.
Also I named colocations for people who can not host things at home for whatever as a valid reason to have a datacenter.
Colocations for actual people = good
Multiple square kilometer Microsoft exclusive hyperscaler = bad
How is that not a reasonable take?

and zero of those people think that datacenters should be abolished.
Wrong. I am one of those people who believes in individual freedom and believes most datacenters should be abolished.
If you host from home and you don't use a small VPS to hide the origin IP ... Anybody can just find out the general location where I live down to a few miles.
Also not true. That depends entirely on if your ISP publishes location data or not. My ISP does not publish this and you can not find the approximate location of my home IP.

@icedquinn@blob.cat @tyil@fedi.tyil.nl @sun@shitposter.world @pwm@darkdork.dev Datacenters are only fine by my standards if they operate as a colocation space where many different individuals come together who each have their own rackspace.

@sun@shitposter.world @icedquinn@blob.cat @pwm@darkdork.dev @tyil@fedi.tyil.nl I have personally always been mad about datacenters in general and the current "AI" craze has not changed that, only made it worse.
The internet is not supposed to be all centralized in one place owned by like 5 companies. Everyone should own their own hardware and host stuff for each other from home.
In the ideal world we would not need datacenters because the internet is fully decentralized.

@Phobos@eientei.org @lain@lain.com @sun@shitposter.world I do want to say I am also the particular kind of autist who enjoys editing wikipedia as well.
I like to argue that documentation is more important than the actual code often, because without proper documentation nobody knows how to use it. There's probably many software projects out there being really underappreciated simply because they lack proper documentation.

@Phobos@eientei.org @lain@lain.com @sun@shitposter.world Whenever I'm working on a project for a really long time I really look forward to writing the README because writing a README is like finally being able to tell the rest of your world about the thing you made.

@sun@shitposter.world The risk for free software projects is actually the biggest, proprietary software can not be investigated that easily because their source code is secret.
As much as I appreciate you adding a proper copyleft license for this project, this unfortunately this does not matter much. The risk that your LLM pulls in code from other free software projects with an incompatible license is very minimal.
A much greater risk is that the LLM pulls in code from a proprietary software project. Because guess what? LLMs aren't trained from just from free software repositories obviously. Every person around the world that is using Cursor, Claude, Copilot, Codex, etc. while working on proprietary software projects is feeding their proprietary repositories into their ever growing training data set.

SuperDicq@SuperDicq@minidisc.tokyo (2026-07-29 17:20:28)
@sun@shitposter.world @lain@lain.com The problem is that output from LLMs currently has a legally ambiguous status. You can not risk integrating it into any existing free software right now, so that's why a lot of projects, with some exceptions, choose not to allow it or heavily limit its usage only to specific tasks.
And on a personal note I think obvious LLM output is extremely tasteless. Seeing someone not even use some effort to at least even write their own README file makes me cringe. I always compare it to the same type of feeling you get when you see a corporate logo which uses Comic Sans.
