@lain I would be surprised if McD's wasn't adjusting their prices periodically around median household income to ensure sales.
do you know if the range of salaries has widened around the median? A flatter distribution would produce a larger subset of people for whom the median-adjusted hamburger is still too expensive
it might help to explain why so many people complain about feeling squeezed even on things like this where the price is an inflation-adjusted equivalent

I remember booting up my Windows 95 PC and downloading a fresh copy of Pleroma. Back in those days it was written in Visual Basic and you had to wait an hour to send a post and another one to read the timeline. But we were happy back then!

The first thing I'd want to do with SPARC register windows is make the spilling fully asynchronous with explicit serialisation. Define the spill region in memory as part of the state. Whenever the load-store unit has spare cycles, push out older windows and also reload newer ones.
Now, when you add register rename, you have a bunch of rename registers that you can discard because they are stored in memory. Keep the spill fully asynchronous. As soon as a function call exits speculation, push the values in the newly left window out to memory. When you run out of rename registers, discard the ones associated with the oldest still-in-rename-registers window and reuse them immediately. When you have more than a threshold number of available rename registers, load ones from the nearest frame.
Now you've got an architecture that should (no actual experiments were done to validate this, someone really should do them) scale nicely to systems with register rename. Fewer explicit load / store instructions for register spills and reloads and explicit information about when to speculatively reload values.

As an aside, the T1-T3 generation has this annoying combination of no branch predictors and pipelines long enough that the BDS can't cover the branching bubble
I mean given that the ISA (fortunately!) has conditional moves you can work around it to some degree by preferring cmovs and avoiding branches unless absolutely needed but still a pain when deciding how to tune things when compiling binaries haha

It's from the 70s but the idea is of course still interesting. the median household income in 73 was ~$10k, now it's ~80k. so for a 65 cent big mac, that would be $5 dollars today, which is pretty much the price of a big mac.
