@mangeurdenuage @syzygy The fact that there are still Mozilla Firefox users defending it after Mozilla rugpulled everyone caring about them by removing their "we will never sell your data" clause from the TOS is beyond my understanding. If anything, someone should start building a usable browser on webkit-gtk instead, because that's the last option currently.

>:bait:
@mangeurdenuage I'm serious about this btw. You've seen their incompetence first hand and after they've been notified of breaking websites with their idiotic decisions, they keep doing them anyway.
Now a Firefox user falls into two camps:
a) masochist that enjoys using a deteriorating product that is more broken with every release
b) an idiot blinded by their "open internet" smoke screen behind which only incompetence and controlled opposition is hiding
Remember how WebKit/Safari was clowned on for years even by Apple users for being a barely usable browser? That is Firefox now.

Using Firefox at this point can be used as a pass/fail IQ test. Imagine using a browser that deliberately breaks websites.

@sun @iamtakingiteasy @lain @cell You can make it work, half life itself is an example of that to some degree. Most immersive sims as well tell a linear story with near absolute freedom in gameplay. But everyone that did the latter correctly is dead, because it is way too niche of a market.

Phantasm@phnt@fluffytail.org (2026-08-16 20:01:29)
@sun @iamtakingiteasy @lain @cell My point is that you can have both, but usually not at the same time. Once you try to mix both, it usually ends in an interactive movie whose gameplay sucks and whose story is told via cutscenes longer than the gameplay, which also suck.
Play any modern first person shooter singleplayer made in the last decade meant for masses and you have basically that. An interactive movie.

The only solution is to give a "power user" option for administrators on clean install that disables all the crap for people that know how to use computers. It must not be changed after install, or user account creation since they will do that once rumors of the mythical power user mode come to light. Or allow a "power user" administrator to change it afterwards for other users.
Phantasm@phnt@fluffytail.org (2026-08-16 16:27:11)
Once you deal with taking care of computers for normies, all the BS Microsoft does to force down updates on users makes instantly sense.
Automatic updates? No brainer, otherwise they will never install them.
A limit on how far you can delay installing updates? Again, they will never get installed if you can just say "ask me later" all the time.
Removal of Shutdown/Reboot without installing updates? They will never be applied even when they are scheduled to install.

Ironic considering that kfcc posters and orbiters used to be the better quality posters. Sleepy gang, FCE, Cyberia, all came from there. At some point in late 2021 something changed, so I left Fedi for a year, don't even remember what the reason fully was. Probably poasties and politics becoming prevalent (an issue to this day).

The current one likely is not worth it. The one from 5+ years ago was, but now is too late for that.
>I nominate everybody in this thread.
I meant it in "Do you know someone that should be here, but isn't yet." way. Because I genuinely struggle with that, the only one I know doesn't care about social media besides following artists (he would hate misskey.io). You can grow the network with interesting features, but at this point I'm not convinced that if you make a good alternative to walled gardens, people will naturally come. We've had that already and it didn't end well.

If you know of people that won't destroy the culture of the network and seek power over everyone like in the great Twitter to Mastodon exodus over 5 years ago, I would be interested. Main thing this network needs is gatekeeping that prevents takeovers of the network. It has been taken over enough as it currently is.

Let's make our content quality worse for everyone so we can push our agenda. While being completely clueless that poisoned data is trivial to detect and remove from already trained models or training sets.
I wonder how OCR engines that someone with accessibility issues could use cope with that. One of the most retarded takes ever.

This is a general statement on society as a whole. The fun on the Internet is mostly gone, reduced to ragebait and infighting.

@i @lain @sun The two features I'm in the process of building into Pleroma are both incompatible with Mastodon, one will be a new FEP. Do you think I care that Mastodon users won't be able to take advantage of them? No, they can try to convince their emotionless CEO to support them. Not my problem.

@fristi @sun Bootcamps are probably one of the reasons why the industry went downhill fast. On the other hand, if you wanna learn something, the resources simply aren't there in most cases. Or aren't of high enough quality.
Like for example I picked up PHP to automate writing some parts of my blog. The PHP docs page is probably one of the worst online documentations I've ever used. Unless you specifically know what you are looking for, you will not find it easily.
But I too like my syntax highlighting and LSP warnings.

I just think it should work differently. Preferably without ISPs at all.
I don't think that is possible, especially without ISPs. Someone has to own the backbone and own the hardware capable of handling tens of terabits while routing it correctly and without extra delays. Your Linux router can't even handle the Internet's full routing table as of now, and it certainly would not be able to deal with the even more fragmented routing without ISPs. Even only without residential/business ISPs.
Colocations for actual people = good
Multiple square kilometer Microsoft exclusive hyperscaler = bad
The hyperscalers weren't an issue until recently. Before AI it was only AWS and Cloudfed. It's a reasonable take except that most people don't have a need for collocation. Business, even small ones, are the main customers. No need to have huge racks onprem with large HVAC systems, large UPSes and at least 10Gbit fiber when you can move it to a location dedicated specifically for that.

I am one of those people who believes in individual freedom and believes most datacenters should be abolished.
Alright, then how will you deal with the few tier 1 ISPs. They surely care about your individual freedoms and will definitely not nullroute your AS/send angry emails to your ISP when they don't like you. That definitely never happened. Oh wait, HE did that to KF.
Of course I'm completely ignoring the fact that you need peering exchanges and those all live in DCs. Anyone that says most DCs should be abolished has no idea how the Internet works. Because it's not just about you and your freedoms, but about everyone else and there are many completely valid reasons why you would want to collocate in a DC.
Also not true. That depends entirely on if your ISP publishes location data or not
Doesn't really matter. You can approximately get the location by timing routes from multiple places and looking at the last hops. That will get you close to the NAT at least. My GeoIP ranges from the same city to a place 80+km away.
