@RickiTarr Grandma used to tell stories about when she was a young girl in Germany. One recurring theme was “Potato Day”, this mythical holiday nobody had ever heard of, where all the children would get a day off school, and the entire Villiage would head out into the fields and harvest potatos.
She would go on and on about how it was a big fun thing, and all of the potato-foods that the women would make at home…
25 years later, for no discernable reason, I did the math and understood why nobody knew what she was talking about. The children from the Villiage were in the fields…. because all the men were at war. After 1945, there was no more “Potato Day”.

I am kinda wondering why radio streaming service is buffering/throttling, well it makes sense, bandwidth is limited. but I always thought that, there are not really a lot of people who listen on it? and also I thought they could use something like video streaming service has been doing, instead of peer-to-peer, its centralized and broadcasted. basically one worker with more bandwidth handle the serving, so the radio host need only 1 connection to the worker.

@nerthos obviously it would probably have a lot of negative aspects to empower police to prevent all crime but there's not even a real compromise, they just let it happen

@nerthos I saw a tweet during the Xi Jinpng visit to San Francisco where the police cleaned up all the crime for days and the person said "it's radicalizing to know that the government can prevent crime but it chooses not to"

I had this nagging memory for months that Neal Stephenson foresaw this moment in history in the novel Anathem. Finally managed to find it...
"Early in the Reticulum—thousands of years ago—it became almost useless because it was cluttered with faulty, obsolete, or downright misleading information,” Sammann said.
“Crap, you once called it,” I reminded him.
“Yes—a technical term. So crap filtering became important. Businesses were built around it. Some of those businesses came up with a clever plan to make more money: they poisoned the well. They began to put crap on the Reticulum deliberately, forcing people to use their products to filter that crap back out. They created syndevs whose sole purpose was to spew crap into the Reticulum. But it had to be good crap.”
