Reply to @RickiTarr@beige.party Justin Derrick@JustinDerrick@mstdn.ca (2026-09-02 12:04:01) @RickiTarr Grandma used to tell stories about when she was a young girl in Germany. One recurring theme was “Potato Day”, this mythical holiday nobody had ever heard of, where all the children would get a day off school, and the entire Villiage would head out into the fields and harvest potatos.

She would go on and on about how it was a big fun thing, and all of the potato-foods that the women would make at home…

25 years later, for no discernable reason, I did the math and understood why nobody knew what she was talking about. The children from the Villiage were in the fields…. because all the men were at war. After 1945, there was no more “Potato Day”.
