@volpeon @fristi tbh I don't know how to reason about it because potentially, anyhting that uses a bunch of power can be criticized. but at the same time we fully permit total wastes of electricity like amusement parks or whatever so clearly we know there's some kind of exception for fun but I don't know where the line is

@sun @fristi I sometimes do wonder what makes the environmental impact of AI so much worse in people's minds than computer games, which heavily use GPUs as well. Computer games aren't essential to live, and insane graphics aren't necessary at all to be able to enjoy games. Unreal Engine is famously an absolute waste of performance. Why aren't we outraged about this?

@volpeon this also completely ignores practical standpoints like codebase maintainability and optimization. You can't do these things with AI and I sure as hell wouldn't want performance-sensitive stuff do be ever written by AI because it's completely unreliable.

Here's a new rule just for you: don't use compilers for any of your kernel submissions.
Because if you can't show that you really understand what the machine is actually doing by writing your code in assembler, then I don't want to see your code contribution. You clearly aren't competent if you can't write it that way.
Come on, this argument is disingenuous. Whether you write code in assembler or a higher level language, you still need to figure out the business logic you're trying to implement. Using an LLM allows you to completely bypass even these considerations, which is simply not possible when merely switching programming languages. This doesn't mean all developers are going to use it this way, but the risk is there and you can't deny the quality of a lot of software has been declining even when responsible handling is claimed.
