I think foreigners will have difficulties comprehending our political landscape. They won't realize, as many Indonesians themselves, how NTT has been adversely affected by Javacentrism.
NTT residents are just as victimized as queer people, just in different ways. The regime stole their land to build geothermal plants. Capitalists mine their minerals without giving back to them, even murdered local activists. Some of them are victims of human trafficking committed by police higher ups!

#TodayILearned that the word “benzin”, used to mean “gasoline” or “petrol” in many languages around the world, came from the name of an aromatic gum from Java called “lubān jāwi” in Arabic (lit. “Javanese frankincense”). The word then traveled to medieval Catalan where it was rebracketed into “lo benjuí”. It then entered French as “benjoin”, and the rest is history. “Benzin” and other variants were used to name any number of things that produced a volatile or combustible vapor, including petroleum.
Interestingly, petroleum is called “bensin” in Java, and I never realized the term traveled around the world and returned full circle.

I went to school in India, and we learned the multiplication tables with a chant that involved a postfix operator called "zaar":
two one zaar two
two two zaar four
two three zaar six
two four zaar eight
two five zaar ten
two six zaar twelve
…
We just accepted such a postfix operator as the most natural thing, and freely used it when talking to each other: “what is seven six zaar?” (42)
Some of us were adults before realizing (and some probably never realizing) that these “tables” we all sang as children had probably started as:
two ones are two
two twos are four

As a sighted person I use software tools to visualize the space used on my disk into space-filling maps where I can quickly see where I’m using disk-space. It solves the problem of having folders of a lot of tiny files taking up space, or huge files you didn’t know existed in some directory you forgot.
I would like to learn how people with vision impairments handle this task. It would be great then to extend existing tooling to serve people with vision impairments as effectively as sighted people benefit from the tool.

🍄 There's a mushroom that makes people see tiny people. The same tiny people, every time.
Lanmaoa asiatica is a bolete sold as a delicacy in Yunnan, China and the northern Philippines. Cooked thoroughly, it's a savory umami-rich food. Eaten raw or undercooked, it reliably triggers Lilliputian hallucinations, visions of tiny elf-like figures marching under doors and crawling up walls.
Classic psychedelics give everyone a different trip. This mushroom gives basically everyone the same one. University of Utah researchers sequenced it and found no known psychoactive compound at all, no psilocybin, no ibotenic acid. It points to a completely new hallucinogenic chemical.
The trips start 12 to 24 hours after eating and can last up to a week. Nobody uses it recreationally. Hot pot restaurants just set a 15-minute timer and warn you not to eat until it goes off.

Fun fact: the Swiss cheese model was originally used to explain how disasters happen when multiple safety failures line up. Turns out that self-care works the same way, just aimed at protection instead of failure. Sleep alone won’t save you on a bad day, and neither will one boundary or one workout. However, if we stack enough imperfect layers together and the gaps stop lining up, the stress hopefully gets caught before it gets through to our psyche. #mentalhealth #selfcare

Likewise, I would never support or encourage murder. But it does seem to be the case that business leaders get to make decisions that they know will result in deaths, often mass deaths, and that's just considered a cost of business. Maybe they get a tiny fine now and then, or a lawsuit penalty that hardly scratches into their profits. In fact, deaths that can be avoided, but aren't, in the pursuit of profits is seldom, if ever, even treated as manslaughter. Engels called this social murder.

Have finished 'Balcony Over Jerusalem' by John Lyons. It's showing its age (published 2017), but was on this list: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-11-22/israel-gaza-war-summer-reading-list-for-mps/104630224
I was reading specifically for insights into how local people feel about each other ... there was some information, but not enough for my liking. There was also quite a lot of information about how foreign journalists are treated by Israel and lobby groups like the AIJAC.
