remembering the time i was in a cafe and two people nearby were catching up after not seeing each other a while, one asked what the other is doing now and they said "i'm studying to be an exorcist" and the first person was struggling to be enthusiastic about this news while clearly not sure if they were joking or for real

@alina@girldick.gay i hate how articles on super-technical stuff start by explaining what it is. like if i don't know what an abstract syntax tree parser is, why would i be reading a page on how to write one in the first place? the link would have never been clicked. its a waste of time and a useless eyestrain to include such a blah blah blah.

I never heard about this till now - in 2025 a (now former) MIT student faked writing AI neural net software, faked conducting a study with a large materials science company (showing the software increased number of materials patents by ~40%), faked a "Corning Research" website when people started to ask questions (to make it look like he'd work with Corning), faked emails from execs at Corning. Apparently in an attempt to gain university tenure when he graduated with an MIT economics PhD.
