@whitequark
this causes the base system to be updated from 15.1 to 15.1p3
This is a pkgbase system then? This includes a kernel update, so rebooting is the correct thing to do.
If you're using a pkgbase system and don't want to update the base system, you should add -r to specify only the built-from-ports repos.
Pkgbase is still marked as experimental, so if you're using it then please report issues upstream!

oh, it turns out that what happened would be:
i install nodejs
this causes the base system to be updated from 15.1 to 15.1p3
this causes freebsd to decide to autonomously reboot (wtf??)
this causes the CI orchestrator i'm using to falsely report it as a timeout despite no such thing happening

@sun @waltercool ask me around 2046, if software engineering even survives as an occupation.
But I'd look at hardcore richly typed languages inspired by Rust and Haskell and their progeny. Lean looks promising, for one.

more than four times slower (i'm not sure what the exact time is, that's just how much i had to bump the timeout so far) than apt install of the same set of software
edit: nevermind, the piece of software that was reporting the timeouts was lying to me

wow, installing anything from ports on freebsd is absurdly slow

the one thing i don’t get about some fedi software still is how the subject field is treated as a content warning field??

@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz @relay@relay.toot.io @ruben Yeah. I agree the conversation needs nuance. But I also think those aren’t contradictions!
It’s not just worker protection, plenty of ills:
⁃ No human is reading my resume, I actively need to make it worse for humans so it passes that filter
⁃ Bad bosses (not an llm problem) are using them to further antagonize workers and pretend it’s “hard data”
⁃ They’re eroding the open web that created the conditions for them to exist (both in corpus and skilled individuals)
⁃ I believe they’re eroding communities by reinforcing individualism and a disdain of other disciplines through dunning-kruger.
I worry about those things because they’re
Problems now and feel they’re more urgent than the productivity boost. They’re not new problems but they’re supercharged, and why I’d rather put a harder line on “maybe we shouldn’t go there” rather than wait for it to play out.

(( Sending from Mastodon, asking you because you're the one who I know have misskey.id and an account on another instance ))
Do you feel misskey.id is unusably slow today? Or is it just me?
I have a hard time navigating across pages. The load time is very long. Sometimes it returns to normal, but it often repeats the same problem.
I can confirm my internet connection is good. Other sites are working just fine here.

I've had people ask before why I post art that's been drawn on lined or grid notebook paper and not blank drawing paper. It's honestly a big psychological hack: blank drawing paper is for "real" art and I'm afraid to mess it up, but art on lined paper is legally "a doodle" and the art cops have to let you walk even if it's bad

@ruben I mean, I think there should be better protections in this era for employees, and in europe who already had good labor laws it seems like it's much less of a problem; Personally I'd say that this is more of a 'vicious abuse of workers' case than something that's truly 'the fault of AI', because those companies would use any other excuse to fire people.
I however do think that technically, they're doing a great job when applied properly, but that's just my two cents.

@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz @relay@relay.toot.io Some of the contradictions could well be “a social effect of llms” vs “the technical capability of the llm”.
Eg. Jobs being taken away = a social effect due to hype. But the output being terrible = a technical one.

Schrödinger's LLM:
It's simultaneously bad and not useful, but also cheating and gives you an unfair advantage, and somehow taking all the jobs, too.
also the hype is going to collapse any moment, except everyone seems to use AI.
also AI is super duper terrible for the environment and there's no way around it, yet china who is 'overtaking the USA in AI' is one of the first countries that managed to lower their total CO2 output.
also it's all stolen, but open consentful models exist 🤷
