@sun @EllisDee @mushroom_soup Outlawing shell companies wouldn't solve all of our problems, but it would solve quite a few of them. The local hospital got bought out by private equity, "sold" the land itself to an LLC owned by themselves, and they're in the process of trashing the hospital's reputation and quality of care so they can declare bankruptcy and have their sockpuppet LLC sell the land the hospital's on

@mrsaturday @mushroom_soup @EllisDee there's a substantial thing too in america where the house basically is garbage yeah and the company that built it uses shell companies to avoid fixing them or getting sued, so like you know the son of a bitch is still building houses in your town after they fucked you but you have no legal recourse somehow in capitalist americastan

@7666 it's just you can't make a clean line between a cause and the suicide when you are trying to make a predictive model for individuals. it's a big unknown

@Inginsub this is all folk knowledge I picked up from some people that know. another issue was that the multiple cell coprocessors demanded multiprocessing and at that point most engines and most developers were used to single threaded design.

Hey I have someone who is very anti-ai and wants to avoid it as much as possible and is looking for a job that doesn't have an ancap boss (as a libertarian, lol). he's a really talented junior and likes rust, lmk if anyone has any leads, he's in the us and needs a remote job.

@7666 also it just plain ended up not being a good scientific discriminator. ok, you lost your job and committed suicide, more people lost their job and didn't.

@Inginsub they put all the performance in the cell coprocessors and gave it a kind of lame main processor and then gave you a crappy sdk and documentation for the first couple of years. I'm told the SDK and documentation was very good by the end but when it first launched the SDK was apparently very very limited

@7666 the big "for reason" was bereavement, like your spouse dies, that was the only one that apparently could be teased out

@sun i'm guessing "you're sad for no reason" and "you're sad for a reason" was too subjective to be medically consistent and likely had the same treatment anyway

@theorytoe @Turdicus I think the best argument against superhero movies is that they've been making them for too long at this point and it's creating fatigue. but like, if you still enjoy them then that's not an argument you shouldn't.

I was interested to learn that the medical community stopped separating out suicide from depression "with cause" (like your life materially sucks) from clinical depression because it's basically just impossible to do that in aggregate it turns out. sometimes people's life sucks because they have depression and can't fix their life, and sometimes they have big external problems in their life that gives them depression and it's just impossible to figure out objectively which is which. also you can point at objective environmental decline and it can be completely disconnected from suicide rates. like people in wealthy countries sometimes do it a lot more than people in abject poverty. not clear how much this is a measurement problem but the consensus seems to be that it is not.

tbh most of the people who call that shit fake, gay, and cringe are just people who have not a bit of joy in their lives
because how the hell can you be mad all the time if you enjoy things

@Paradox @prettygood they stopped doing long lived certificates and there's a sunset period in the browsers themselves that hasn't taken effect yet, to start ignoring the expiration of long-lived certificates and consider them expired sooner
