@feld @sun Wouldn't the fact that the books are copywritten at all imply that none of them are important rare relics of history? If they were old they would be public domain. I'm not particularly concerned about the typhoon of human generated slop that dominate modern "literature".

---Reply--- Blurry Moon@sun@shitposter.world (2026-07-30 07:59:32) @nimrod @feld first we need to acknowledge that the complaint is not very coherent. the books were rare for a lot of reasons but the fact that they weren't already scanned and available to the entire world was directly because of government and publishers.

the argument wasn't they're stealing anymore, it was that books are beautiful and should never be destroyed (they don't actually believe this) or that the information is being lost (it's probably not the only book, why don't we just publish the scan, wait, who is preventing that again?)

I can guarantee that the AI companies would LOVE to be able to add the complete citation and excerpt with every AI response.
