a long time ago (late 200x?) I stumbled upon ChroniX Radio which is a streaming radio station of various metal and metal-adjacent music.
It was a completely internet-first radio station, not a stream from an existing terrestrial radio station. Not the first to have ever existed of course, but one of the larger ones that was well managed and had pretty great programming.
Somewhere around 2014 it shutdown and I was sad and completely forgot about it.
It got resurrected and moved to Canada in 2016. It's still running.
The best part about it is that there are NO ADS. You don't get those shitty interruptions like from iHeartRadio or other streaming radio platforms. Rarely there's a very brief self-promo clip, but otherwise it just streams and streams.
Even back before the shutdown it only had a clip about being listener-supported and that was it.
So anyway, it's been back and I didn't realize it. I don't know who is funding this operation. Someone must have had a massive windfall and is happy to pay to keep it running because it seems doubtful community alone could fund it, but who knows!
