@sun @fristi I sometimes do wonder what makes the environmental impact of AI so much worse in people's minds than computer games, which heavily use GPUs as well. Computer games aren't essential to live, and insane graphics aren't necessary at all to be able to enjoy games. Unreal Engine is famously an absolute waste of performance. Why aren't we outraged about this?

It's because they don't actually care about the environmental impact. That's not a concern to them.

No matter what you bring up as a counter example, almonds, golf courses, denim jeans, other forms of entertainment, even the electricity needed to keep the computer and display running while they make digital art...

They'll always reply with something from one of two tracks:
1) "But I do care about that" (bullshit, I hit your account with Arctic Shift and, surprise surorise, you've never once reply guy'd someone over almonds or jeans, and you don't invade r/almonds or r/golf whining about it)
2) "But those things are actually useful for humanity" which gets us closer to their actual position. They either cannot imagine any use case for generative tooling, or they're pretending that they can't because being anti-AI is a Current Thing and if they want to be a good Internet leftist, they must subscribe to the entire Internet Leftist cable package of Deeply Held Beliefs.

@r000t @volpeon @fristi did you know that a fursuit and dragon dildo purchase uses more fossil fuels to manufacture than five years of moderate chatgpt usage.
