@quad @sun the actual reason for this is somewhat more insidious than you think
translation houses pay _so_ poorly that the only people that can afford to take the jobs as actual work tend to be in areas of lower cost of living (see: south east asia), being handled by non-native speakers
or if it is handled by a native speaker, they're incentivised to rush due to the low pay

@FloatingGhost @sun Oh I am well aware that subtitles are typically just done by some underpaid guy in the Philippines. Can't maximize profits and shareholder value otherwise. That's probably how the bad quality subs happen.
But Crunchyroll are different, they used to actually do pretty decent subs. But over the past 10 years the quality has declined, however their subs have a pretty specific flavor of "bad".
