If I had a nickel for every time I’ve been offered an LTO 5 tape drive for free, I’d have two nickels.
…which isn’t a lot, but it’s wild that it has happened twice!

I got the PowerVault 124T with an LTO 5 drive from my last job for free, and now my buddy offered me a desktop LTO 5 eSAS tape drive that was otherwise on its way to be disposed of.
I bought an internal 5.25" SAS LTO 6 drive off a recycler, untested, for ~$80. I lucked out, and it works fine, despite some bent metal on the chassis.
Haven't had any luck getting a deal on anything newer yet, but I'm aiming for LTO 8 to be my next step up, if the price is right.
