@sun I refuse to believe these people have tried all the sports, skills and arts and are genuinely starved for mental enrichment.
I think it goes a lot deeper. Think of how dysfunctional families often openly tolerate shocking things. The rituals and practices definitely serve a darker purpose IMO. The book Prometheus Rising touches on that dynamic a tiny bit.

@gabriel yeah it only works for a narrow and fairly shallow subset of "achievement". Like, gaining material wealth and power.
Kaia did mention though, at that level, you are then also deprived normal pleasures that you can easily experience if you're a nobody that people aren't hounding to extract your wealth
