@CoralineAda@ruby.social nobody forces anyone to use gpl or bsd syyle licences for their open source projects, anyone can write their own that says "no llm company or defence contractor is granted a license" or name specific companies or genocidal countries like israel where the license is not valid.

---Reply--- bun microsystems :labrysSickle: :labrysEstrogen:@emiliamicrosystems@brain.worm.pink (2026-10-07 07:34:15) @brettm @CoralineAda that would make it not an open source or free license tho

licenses are not the right tool to use for this sort of ethical guidelines imo
put it in a code of conduct or something. if you put it in a license you're just doing a "This software must be used for Good, not Evil" moment
licenses are also stupid
please use the bare minimum, ISC or 0BSD or whatever funny thing you come up with, fuck copyright

?? 'open source' means the source code is open, its right there in the words. nothing about license. that people use one term ('open source') when they mean another ('permissively licensed') does not change that.

if you don't want General Dynamics (eg) to use your software, then it must be in the license, "this license does not apply to General Dynamics, General Dynamics is not granted any right to use this license" a code of conduct does nothing and has no force.
