@SuperDicq @r000t yeah, locking people up is a practical measure to protect society, and it follows naturally that while locked up, we make criminals undergo whatever process we find best balances effectiveness at rehabilitating them with speed and cost.
the thing is, the outcome of the process of justice should deter unrelated people from offending as much as possible. if what happens to me if i hurt people is that i get free therapy and get to live somewhere i'm fed and cared for for a while, and that while gets longer the more severe my infraction, if i'm lonely and poor enough, suddenly stabbing thirty people to death sounds like a great idea. at some point, hurting others needs to hurt me.
i'm not saying to believe exactly what i do, which is public torture and execution for any crime more severe than raising your voice, but i am saying "these damn americans and their punishments" is not really the best thing to argue, even if "i don't care about the philosophical angle of whether l.c. was really herself when she strangled her kids, she's a danger to society and until we can satisfy ourselves that's no longer true, she needs to be removed from society" is an excellent point.

In a proper society nobody has trouble feeding themselves or finding a place to live. If that problem is taken care of nobody would try to get in jail on purpose. That's the real problem here.

@SuperDicq
No shit?
We know that's the problem. We also know it ain't ever getting solved because the people with the ability to solve it are incentivized to make it worse.
