I *very specifically* want an image viewer that runs locally and I can point to a random folder and it'll start doing its thing
FWIW I also turn off all syncing/cloud features in GPhotos so yeah, for all practical purposes it's a local-only viewer~
Though, were I OK with bringing in the forest and gorillas I think I'll start with setting up Nextcloud on a spare machine as per another subthread's suggestion¹ before spending anything but that's another matter

@koakuma "without getting into the ecosystem" no all data is stored in NAS, but all things considered, it is accessible from android/ios/web. It also supports auto ingestion, e.g. just plug in your flash drive / sd card, then everything is copied automatically and ready to be consumed.
also, fwiw, Synology NAS starts from $150.

@koakuma fwiw synology has its own app (if you compare with Google Photos) that connects to Synology NAS.

This is correct. However, I think the results of get_direct_conversations can be ordered by activity (post.created_at). I made a quick test, the estimated cost of the query is exactly the same.

I've never seen an imageboard with reposts. I think only comments should bump threads.
