@rees yeah I kinda gave up and took your advice, instead of trying to learn this particular problem I just told chatgpt to research it and test things while I solve other problems

"Unsafe Rust" by Robert Seacord (convenor of the ISO/IEC international standardization working group for the C programming language)
"This presentation explores the role of Unsafe Rust in systems programming and its implications for safety-critical software. Rust is designed to provide memory safety and prevent common programming errors through its ownership and borrowing model. However, certain low-level operations require the use of unsafe code, which introduces risks such as undefined behavior (UB) and under-specified semantics. We examine the distinction between safe and unsafe Rust, the nature of UB, and why formal specifications are essential for reliability. The talk highlights challenges in defining Rust’s semantics, the concept of library-level invariants, and the importance of operational models for correctness. Finally, we outline the “Golden Path” toward a complete Rust specification, including initiatives like MiniRust, A-mir-formality, Tree Borrows, and Miri, which aim to close the UB gap and provide a rigorous foundation for safe and predictable Rust programs"

@lunarised every accusation is a confession. when someone says AI is shit at programming, they mean they are bad at identifying requirements and writing specifications

So, uh, job search update:
About a month ago now, I pleaded on mastodon for help. I didn’t really have a goal in mind. I was just miserable at work, not getting paid enough to do too much work.
I posted a big long, rambling post that ended with, effectively, “will someone please help me”
A lot of you reached out, actually. It was a truly overwhelming outpouring of help. And I _definitely_ got overwhelmed by it. I’m sure I dropped at least a few opportunities right on the floor. If you’ve been waiting to hear from me and haven’t, I am truly sorry.
Today I just filled out the forms to start a new job, and it happened because someone reached out to me after reading my post.
My first day is in a little less than a month. On top of it being a welcome escape from my current position, it happens to be _literally_ a dream job of mine.
#getFediHired works. If you’re on here, and you’re losing hope, know that it works. There is a way out for you. You’re not in this alone.
If you’re not trying to get out of your current job, or you’re not actively looking, I urge you to check out the hashtag anyway. Boost folks. Send them leads.
It works.

@lolitechengineer @lunarised I tried to get a rust project to work the other day and it took AI 25 minutes to untangle the fucking mess, no human being outside the organization making that pile of shit software was getting their github source dump running independently. anyway I pointed chatgpt at it and took an enjoyable bike ride outside in the sunshine while it figured it out for me. to some people on here, I majorly fucked up or something.

@sun @newt Most shows start with character archetype that gets thrown into the trash one or two seasons later when the characters actually get fleshed out properly (almost every good show really doesn't get good, or at least doesn't come into its own, until season 3, like TNG and DS9, maybe Voyager, but also House especially, and then some other examples that aren't Star Trek or House would go here).

I remember a few years ago, I was mocked for daring to use typescript, because its "so slow" and "has fundamental issues in its type system"
These dumbasses scream at you to use their flavor of the month programming language/paradigm, but then go on whinging that they cant find any work in their esolangs.
All my whinge.town optimizations have been written in C, and then AI has done the work in fixing it for me to work under beam with elixir (I am not learning elixir mom)

@thomasroiloup @newt my biggest complaint about DS9 is that, like many TV shows, the premise is you're throwing together all these antagonistic characters and quickly they realize that's too hard to write.

Also the shitter used a rust dependency, please rewrite that in C90.

@lunarised a large number of dipshits on here think it's vitally important that you write makefiles by hand or you're not a REAL PROGRAMMER. despite like a year ago pissing and moaning about how there are too many barriers to entry for programming, or the general admission that almost all programming tooling is abysmal dogshit that takes time away from solving the actual problem

you're doing perceptual coding, which you can improve using learned or fixed codebooks. you could have claude code spawn 18 agents to figure out the most efficient vector quantization. I did something similar for a better alternative to thumbhash, although I haven't put it up on a repo yet
