Reply to @adrint@shitposter.world Blurry Moon@sun@shitposter.world (2026-09-18 12:02:08) @adrint @NonPlayableClown @hakui the irony is windows 2k introduced userspace drivers that wouldn't take out your entire os before macos did but vendors just plain didn't write them

fast forward to 2024 and the entire world suffers a trillion dollar productivity loss multi-day microsoft windows outage because crowdstrike endpoint runs entirely in the kernel because microsoft refused for decades to implement a layered security api.

Blurry Moon@sun@shitposter.world (2026-09-18 11:58:21) I am slightly annoyed someone got entire DOOM running on the Pico2, but in my defense I'm squeezing out everything this machine can possibly do WITHOUT tripling the mhz through dangerous overclocking, and at 4x the resolution.

Aero was a neat feature, but the best thing about 7 that XP didn't have is that you can actually revert a previously good registry state.

Can not tell you the amount of times on XP I would BSoD by writing the wrong registry key.

7 was just plain great

Reply to @hakui@tuusin.misono-ya.info Blurry Moon@sun@shitposter.world (2026-09-18 11:49:04) @hakui @adrint 7 also ran in substantially less RAM than Vista, which was an insanely bad regression from XP. tehy were selling brand new Vista laptops that wouldn't even run right out of the box.

Reply to @adrint@shitposter.world Blurry Moon@sun@shitposter.world (2026-09-18 11:47:22) @adrint I think that windows xp is perfect in a lot of ways too, and has the added advantage that it will run in 128 megabytes of RAM. But, later versions of Windows added some things that are very desirable like a better security architecture, updated directx, updated powershell. all things that are transparent to the end user except directx which lets you play nearly any game.

even newer games that refuse to run below windows 10, this is often an artificial restriction which can be binary-patched out and the game runs 100% the same.

Though I still think the macOS releases of it's time did the desktop compositing and convenient feature sets in a more sensible way.

Reply to @sun@shitposter.world Blurry Moon@sun@shitposter.world (2026-09-18 11:42:57) @adrint windows 11 is the total opposite. it is slow so you notice it, and constantly pesters you to install stuff or remind you it's pride week or reinstalls "features" you uninstalled, again, after every update.

Reply to @adrint@shitposter.world Blurry Moon@sun@shitposter.world (2026-09-18 11:40:21) @adrint it is the best version of windows, but not because it's exciting or interesting but because it's nearly transparent, it just works without forcing you to think about it.

It really wasn't that good, actually (particularly when compared with OSX 10.4, 10.5). At least in my living memory, Windows has always been the corporate slop OS.
