Why does ‘Dutch’ refer to the Low Countries, but ‘Deutsch’ to Germany?
It’s because their medieval ancestor denoted any vernacular continental West Germanic language.
Only later did their meanings specify, with the meaning of ‘Dutch’ evolving in a different way than that of ‘Deutsch’.
Zoom in on my new infographic to read more – and to learn how ‘Teuton’, ‘Theodoric’, ‘Terry’ and ‘Derek’ are related as well.
All of these stem from a word meaning “people; tribe”.

Good morning. 🌻
My fight to keep my fully human, no-AI translation business alive is still going.
I translate. I teach. I work with actual words, actual context, actual people. No algorithmic word soup. No “close enough” machine sludge. No AI slop wearing a little business suit.
What would help right now is a little support with my running costs while I keep fighting to make this work.
If you’d like to support a tiny human business refusing to let AI eat its lunch, you can do that here:
Every coffee helps keep the lights on, the servers running, and one stubborn human translator at work. 💜

You won't see this from a shinkansen (or maybe for 2 seconds while you blast past)

If you have the time in Japan don't take the shinkansen, you won't see a thing cause its constantly surrounded by concrete sound barriers
we're now taking a limited express and it's actually really nice (and cheaper than shinkansen)
more comfortable than shinkansen too since the shinkansen attacks your ears with many pressure changes due to speed
