Reply to @civodul@toot.aquilenet.fr Ludovic Courtès@civodul@toot.aquilenet.fr (2026-08-31 05:28:32) I’m not a Debian contributor and not a user anymore but I’ve always viewed Debian as a lighthouse for free software and for collective self-determination.

I’m afraid about the signal this vote is sending to the free software community at large; I’m afraid of it moving the Overton window further towards disregard for humans and for the climate change emergency, in a selfish and myopic way that we’ll regret.

Reply to @civodul@toot.aquilenet.fr Ludovic Courtès@civodul@toot.aquilenet.fr (2026-08-31 05:27:18) And that’s probably the crux of the split among free software people on this matter: are our development efforts made in a vacuum?

It’s not new: whether, for instance, to use BitKeeper for Linux development led to similar debates.

The difference here is that LLMs are not even “just a tool” in the sense BK was: the lock-in is going to be much deeper, in our organizations and in our brains. LLMs threaten the ideal of knowledge sharing and the social fabric we’ve built.

Reply to @civodul@toot.aquilenet.fr Ludovic Courtès@civodul@toot.aquilenet.fr (2026-08-31 05:26:51) Disregard of legal issues is more of a detail though.

While the text states that “such tools can substantially improve the productivity of contributors” (which is a subject of debate), what’s telling is what the text doesn’t even mention: the “externalities”, the environmental and social impact of these services.

Reply to @civodul@toot.aquilenet.fr Ludovic Courtès@civodul@toot.aquilenet.fr (2026-08-31 05:25:39) A funny example: the text recognizes that “the legal status of material produced by generative AI systems remains the subject of ongoing discussion in many jurisdictions” (a euphemism) and then states that Debian will “rely on the judgment and responsibility of its individual contributors”—as if individual contributors would know better than lawyers in this domain.

aei :neofox_upside_down: @aei@pleroma.envs.net (2026-08-31 05:25:35) if AI is the future of coding then maybe AI people should pay developers of projects they like actual real money and politely ask them to use AI instead of overwhelming them by mass sending the equivalent of used underwear.

instead of gifting me something actually useful, you give me a relic of a conversation you had with a rubber duck, somehow saying that this is both "useful to me" and "worthy of listing you as a contributor", which both can be debatable.

if AI truly thinks and makes competent code, then you, the AI-assisted contributor, are worthless to me, because i can do everything you do with the tool you shill so frequently

anyways, to my main point, i think AI-assisted contributors are misunderstood.

some of them genuinely believe in the tech and believe that showing you their wacky homebrewed contraption is worthy of your time, which is debatable since it's of no value to you compared to raw tokens or even the money spent to aquire these tokens.

some of them just want to contribute something to be listed as a contributor, which is a tale as old as time in open source.

some of them want to shill their product to you and whoever else is interacting with the project's development, so whatever interaction they have with you is entirely marketing/PR.

and some just want to attack you with vibecoded backdoors, in that case, no social contract would help and you probably wouldn't even know if this was AI or not. though this takes a lot of planning.

you can attack the process as much as you want but you really want to attack the people because the process can change too quickly.

note that i don't mention wholly AI-generated contributions because that's spam. content that has been orchestrated and sent by an autonomous process is by most definitions considered spam. AI-based ones are just less obvious spam that may or may not be of value.

Reply to @civodul@toot.aquilenet.fr Ludovic Courtès@civodul@toot.aquilenet.fr (2026-08-31 05:24:53) Under the guise of neutrality, what it actually does is open the gates to genAI-produced contributions. This, is political.

The “responsible use” narrative shifts responsibility from the group to the individual. It’s not unlike the tobacco industry’s strategy—or indeed that of the “AI” industry.

Reply to @civodul@toot.aquilenet.fr Ludovic Courtès@civodul@toot.aquilenet.fr (2026-08-31 05:24:28) The message of this resolution is that it’s neither “pro” nor “anti”: it’s neutral, promoting “responsible use”.

In fact, it looks like an example of “extreme centrism”: “Debian neither endorses nor prohibits the use of generative AI”, “Contributors are expected to exercise appropriate care”, “[t]his resolution therefore affirms that generative AI is neither exempt from nor subject to special rules”.

The narrative seems to be: “AI” is just another tool, nothing changes here—move along.

Ludovic Courtès@civodul@toot.aquilenet.fr (2026-08-31 05:23:43) So Debian adopted a resolution on the use of “generative AI”:
https://www.debian.org/vote/2026/vote_002#texte

Condorcet spoke: of all the options put to the vote, it must be a good compromise, an average of where the community stands.

How much of a compromise is it really, though?

Multilinguo@multilinguo@mastodon.social (2026-08-31 05:13:51) In Swahili, safari just means "a trip".
The bus to the next town is a safari.

Arabic سفر safar → borrowed by Swahili during a thousand years of Indian Ocean trade → picked up by English mid-19th c. via British East African exploration.

The word entered English meaning "expedition, hunting trip". Over the 20th century, it narrowed to a wildlife or photographic tour as big-game hunting gave way to tourism.

Same word everywhere:
EN/FR/ES safari, DE Safari, RU сафари, JA サファリ, AR سفاري. ---Attachments--- image: https://files.mastodon.social/media_attachments/files/117/186/277/955/693/056/original/ce172348731ff8a5.png
