In Swahili, safari just means "a trip".
The bus to the next town is a safari.

Arabic سفر safar → borrowed by Swahili during a thousand years of Indian Ocean trade → picked up by English mid-19th c. via British East African exploration.

The word entered English meaning "expedition, hunting trip". Over the 20th century, it narrowed to a wildlife or photographic tour as big-game hunting gave way to tourism.
