@aetios @grillchen there was a garfield cartoon in the 80s and it was actually pretty entertaining but. this isn't a huge secret that most comic strips in the usa are basically greeting card advertising, which is really weird.

garfield creator jim davis has written that he deliberately created garfield to be commercially popular and sell merchandise, it didn't come out of any sort of creative impulse. he studied the comics market and crafted a product to target a bunch of underexploited themes and turned it into a billion dollars. I think in that sense it is very american for a lot of bad reasons. but then there's things like hemingway, lots of good comic books etc.
