oh that's neat. i don't think i've ever seen any electronic device send me such a notification before, but now that i see it, it seems so obvious. why doesn't every phone send this notification. it seems so useful, instead of being gaslit about the continuity of time. why not just tell me that something changed. duh

When I was at Google, someone told me a story about a time that “they” completed a big optimization push only to find that measured page load times increased. When they dug into the data, they found that the reason load times had increased was that they got a lot more traffic from Africa after doing the optimizations. The team’s product went from being unusable for people with slow connections to usable, which caused so many users with slow connections to start using the product that load times actually increased.

@fiore@brain.worm.pink yeah, i realize LLVM is, kind of, "The Compiler Backend" in much the same way that Linux is "The Kernel". but that doesn't mean it's not worth my time to play around with BSD, as long as i don't expect it to be The Fastest Thing In The World with drivers for All My Devices Already.

is there any alternative to LLVM?
if i'm writing a compiler and want to take advantage of an existing set of optimizations in a common form and let someone else deal with the intricacies of lowering into specific CPU variants, LLVM is The Toolkit to do exactly that.
does literally anything else provide that as well? (with similar "native" semantics, that is. something like .NET kinda does the same thing if you squint, but it's done on the fly ("high level intermediate form abstracts away codegen and optimizations"), by RyuJIT. they have an ahead of time compiler too but that's LLVM)

Yes, but you see, if my life revolves around us-east-1 and it goes down, then my day will be incredibly uneventful as I cannot do anything other than wait. HOWEVER if I self host everything and my home server explodes, fixing this becomes an urgent priority for me ! Cloud outages are boring, sensory deprivation core. Home outages are exciting, and provide enrichment for the little twink that lives in my head;!!!! Who wouldn't want enrichment??????

I think that writing games in real programming languages like Rust should be illegal. we must mandate every game be written in sloppy languages like JavaScript and C#. we need exceptions to be implicit and everything is nullable. the possibility of type confusion is desirable. weird bullshit cryptic bugs are part of the peak gaming experience. we need stuff to break randomly, for no good reason, in exploitable ways. both to entertain casual players, fascinate hardcore technical players, and keep speedruns competitive for years to come as they discover wild new exploits. in single player games (no netcode), you can even sprinkle in some memory unsafety. not a lot; you do NOT want to trigger SIGSEGV for a casual player, but it will open up a whole new realm of binary exploitation in tool-assisted speedruns.
