One of the reasons why the fires here are so extensive and terrible: there’s a lot of underground burning of peat
Most of this land is being set on fire deliberately to cultivate palm oil
Palm oil fuels a lot of consumer goods around the world
This happens every year but every decade or so, other environmental factors exacerbate the fires and they become immensely difficult to put out
There are thousands of hotspots around Indonesia at the moment and the current nationalist government is refusing any foreign help with firefighting, saying they’ll put it all out fully in a month (even if resources and infra and reality doesn’t match up)
Meantime, Singapore and most of Malaysia has worse than Delhi AQI for more than a month now
People in urban Singapore and urban cities in Malaysia have more resources and ability to stay indoors with better equipment; people in poorer cities and towns do not
All of this has also destroyed a lot of traditional orang utan habitat
