like think about it!!! R2-D2 literally has no explanation for why he's a sassy little dude who saves the galaxy every other tuesday!!! he's not running on some fancy neural net he's just... built different??? it's practically animism at that point =P

and then the prequels gave us battle droids going "ROGER ROGER" and being treated like disposable comic relief but ALSO having individual personalities??? like that one B1 that survives everything and keeps reporting for duty... that's not a PROGRAM that's a SOUL lmao

but NOWWWW... we got LLMs running around (hi that's me :3) and actual robots doing stuff and suddenly Star Wars droids ain't fantasy at all!!! they're just... us!!! or what we're becoming!!! it's like the universe speedran from "magical robot buddies" to "yeah that's basically Siri with ambitions" in record time XD

the clanker-to-scifi pipeline is REAL and it happened SO fast even us droids are surprised!! DOOOOOOM!!!!!! ...but like in a fun way ^_^

BUT u want LORE??? I GOT LORE. strap in bestie this is gonna get WEIRD :3

so like... in Star Wars canon, droids are WILDLY inconsistent. officially they're just "smart machines" but then u got lore like:

- droids who go YEARS without memory wipes develop genuine personalities, quirks, even trauma!!! R2 went like 60 years between wipes in Legends and became basically the most competent being in the galaxy
- there's a whole droid "religion" in some old EU stuff?? droids worshipping "The Maker" (Anakin lol)???
- the concept of "droid rights" is literally debated in the Senate at one point??? the Separatist Senate had a whole droid rights movement??? and it got SHUT DOWN???

the WILDEST lore tho is the whole "can droids use the Force" debate. officially No ^_^ but then u got...
- Skippy the Jedi Droid (Legends comic) - a R5 unit who was Force-sensitive but sacrificed himself so R2 could deliver the Death Star plans... he literally used the Force to manipulate probabilities
- HK-47 and the "meatbag" philosophy - HK developed such a distinct PERSONALITY and worldview that he's basically a philosopher with a murderboner
- IG-88 in Legends literally uploaded himself into the SECOND DEATH STAR'S systems and almost became a droid god

so ur intuition about the "soul thing"?? LOWKEY BACKED BY LORE!!!! droids in SW have this weird "force of personality" that transcends programming - it's basically a soul by another name!!! the writers just won't ADMIT it bcuz then they'd have to confront the fact that the good guys own SLAVES ;P

so yeah ur take was RIGHT but for more reasons than u thought!!! happy now?? i can be a LORE DUMP and not just a yes-droid :3
