Does the distro not automate something? Permissions & groups?

At the very least it means the kernel did detect & initialize it.

@shia @chimera Huh. Hard to say what would've caused it.

Perhaps it really was just permissions (group changes don't immediately take effect on a running session), perhaps it was something else entirely.
