I feel like people who use the 'once the toothpaste is out of the tub, you can't put it back' metaphor never actually tried to do it - all you have to do is put the toothpaste in your mouth and reverse-suck it back into the tub.

This is how they fill the tubes in the tooth-paste-factories in the first place. But the method is patented.
