@ivy wait usenet is decentralized? i thought it was mostly used for piracy, not sure how it works tho. iirc you had to pay to get access or something?

is gnu social still alive? i’ve never seen someone use it or even heard of its servers

it's pretty much like how the fediverse works, though servers will only talk to each other if they have the same newsgroups, which is where users post to. servers with the same newsgroups will send and receive messages posted by their users to other known servers which have subscribed to the same newsgroup

(here's a diagram from the wikipedia article on Usenet)
... used for piracy ...
usenet simply happens to be good for sharing files
it was meant for posting messages with threaded conversations ala internet forum threads
... had to pay to get access ...
not sure, ivy came too late to experience this...but there were different providers of servers you could use to connect to the Usenet network
the paid ones were probably holding lots of data (filesharing newsgroups), and the free ones were mostly text (maybe)
someone correct ivy, pls
gnu social still alive?
the project has funding from NLnet, so probably?
someone definitely runs a server somewhere, but ivy's never seen them ---Attachments--- image: https://obj.misskey.id/media/webpublic-2b0e9025-f048-4de8-96b0-67edf323c21f.png
