“The most fundamental principle is to treat everyone as remote. Period. Once again: Treat everyone as remote. That affects everything: tools, meeting setup, information exchange, communication, documentation, and opportunities.”

I heartily agree with this. Having worked in-office, remote, and hybrid, I have to say that assuming that EVERYONE IS REMOTE ALL THE TIME BY DEFAULT even when they are physically nearby creates better work artifacts, and in the long run, artifacts are all that’s left of your communications.

Humans have a STRONG bias toward in-person communications. When people talk in person, they almost instantly ignore the existence of everyone else who isn’t there, even those on a video screen. I find that reversing this bias is key to becoming more capable and (lowercase a) agile in dealing with team dynamics when people aren’t always colocated.
