I feel like people who use the 'once the toothpaste is out of the tub, you can't put it back' metaphor never actually tried to do it - all you have to do is put the toothpaste in your mouth and reverse-suck it back into the tub.

you can also flush it down the drain, as it should, given what people try to justify using that metaphor.

This is the only good answer actually. Just because you pushed all the tooth paste out, doesn't mean you have to use it.
