Giving out phones will not fix inaccurate social-aid data. Indonesia should correct recipient eligibility data first, then prioritize benefit amounts and coverage for people who need help. Digital delivery also needs reliable internet access in remote areas.

Indonesia's stock market has chronic structural problems: thin liquidity, low free float, valuations detached from fundamentals and speculative-player dominance. IDX has made significant progress on disclosure and governance, but underlying liquidity problems remain. As I told Nikkei Asia, greater transparency has also revealed the extent of that problem.

Indonesia cannot keep propping up the rupiah through central bank intervention. Foreign exchange reserves are finite, and domestic currency hedging is a short-term financial fix.
Want stronger foundations? Boost exports from the real economy. Don't just focus on keeping the exchange rate steady on a screen.

Stronger worker protection matters. Government should also support firms through incentives, including tax incentives and better tax-refund processes. Balancing workers' rights and business continuity is a task for workers, employers and government.

Indonesia's finance ministry is auditing corporate tax refunds (restitusi). Audits are fair. But if payouts are held back, it can look like the state borrowing from companies at zero interest, with no repayment date.
For firms that can mean locked-up working capital, extra bank borrowing at real interest, and late payments to suppliers.
Hard to ask industry to grow while its cash is stuck.
