Was just reminded of how much I *viscerally* hate the "cattle not pets" ideology. I want to say more on this but I don't even know where to begin.

I think it's that it's a call to adopt the mindset of the worst people throughout history, the ones who have deemed themselves above other life forms (including humans) on such a level that they are something aggregate to be managed for profit on a ridiculous scale beyond that which any one being should control, not something to care for. Something that it's even *shameful* to care for.

the first time I heard this phrase (in computer-nerd context) I started grilling the speaker, only to discover that it just means what HPC has been calling 'stateless' for twenty or more years. while 'stateless' is also a bit of a misnomer, it gets across the idea that you don't depend on the configuration state of a give node, and it manages to do so without invoking weird cult messaging about the treatment of animals.
I swear to god k8s is just ten-years-out-of-date HPC with more json and toxic masculinity
