last time i visited kl i cheaped out on the airbnb, so I got to stay in an ampang condo with arabs and europ*an backpackers. lived on 42nd floor and the elevator was super slow, 7 minutes to wait for i, another 10 to go down.

one time an arab guy walks in around floor 35, greets everyone with a salam alaykum and signals me to take out my earbuds. i do and then he is like “you look syrian, are you syrian?”. I scoff a bit and am like what part of me looks syrian, I am russian.

his smile drops down and he starts talking in broken but understandable russian. “you should not be embarrassed to be mistaken for a syrian, rather be embarrassed to be a russian. syria has never done anything bad to russia, but russia has been a bad boy in syria”

I just reply “what?” in english, to which he responds “oh you dont want to speak russian? sure I will tell you in english in front of everyone” and repeats the same thing in english. then he is like “do you understand now?”. not wishing to escalade further i just say “yeah, sorry man” to which he replies “good boy”

we awkwardly stand for another 3 minutes while the guy continues to salam everyone who walks in the elevator. then he gets off at floor 2, and as the door closes the other arabs tell me “dont take it too personally man, he is a good guy but he is bugging recently”, so I ask them if he is syrian and they are like “nah man, he is palestinian”.

did not cheap out on accommodation next time
