> 4chan janitor
how come these will conjure up a certain image in our brains, but when it comes to your local fedi server admin the connotations are different (typically much more positive) :cat_ponder:

@cell
the above are platforms
the moderators there are protecting their fiefdoms (as fedi instances are typically accused of being)
you cannot easily interact with other regions (for example, 4chan cannot speak to other image boards, posting on one reddit board does not show up on another, etc)
the moderators on those are typically not there *for you*, they are there *for the platform*, which is defined not by its users but by its given purpose
on fedi, there are a few instances like this (mastosoc comes to mind most prominently), and they are disliked, and do not have positive connotations
MOST fedi instances though will be defined primarily by the people ON THEM, i.e. the moderator is there *for you*
their goal isn't to moderate YOU per se, but rather moderate the rest of the network FOR YOU (meaning that if you disagree with the moderation decisions, you just go somewhere else)
in other words, the fedi moderator at large is on your side, and if they aren't you have clear alternatives available to you
as opposed to the rest, where they were never on your side to begin with, and if you don't like it you have no other options
